Sam Auinger

Sonic Thinker, Komponist und Sound Artist. Geboren in Linz (Austria), lebt und arbeitet in Linz und Berlin. 

Gemeinsam mit dem Künstler Bruce Odland gründet er 1989 O+A. Ihr zentrales Thema ist hearing perspective. Bekannt sind sie für ihre permanenten Klanginstallationen im öffentlichen Raum, die Stadtklang in Echtzeit stimmen – transformieren wie u.a. bei den Arbeiten harmonic bridge MassMoca (US) seit 1998 und Sonic Vista Frankfurt (D) seit 2011. 2009 beginnen sie mit einem Artikel im Leonardo Music Journal einen Diskurs zum Thema Sonic Commons, der die Dominanz unserer visuellen Kultur im Wahrnehmen der Welt in Frage stellt. www.o-a.info

Sam Auinger erhielt zahlreiche Stipendien und Preise, unter anderem den Kulturpreis der Stadt Linz 2002 und den SKE Publicity Preis 2007. 1997 war er gemeinsam mit Rupert Huber Gast des Berliner Künstlerprogramms des DAAD (berliner theorie). 2008/2009 war er Stipendiat an der Cité International des Arts in Paris und wurde 2010 erster Stadtklangkünstler in Bonn. 2011 war er Featured Artist bei der Ars Electronica in Linz.

In den Jahren von 2008 bis 2012 war er Professor an der UdK Berlin und leitete den Fachbereich experimentelle Klanggestaltung im Masterstudiengang Sound Studies. Von 2013 bis 2015 war er ein Associate am GSD (Harvard Graduate School of Design) in Harvard und 2017 Gastdozent im Programm Art Culture and Technology am MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge).

Neben seiner künstlerischen Tätigkeit arbeitet er mit Stadtplanern und Architekten zusammen, hält Vorträge und leitet Workshops und ist häufig Teilnehmer bei internationalen Symposien zu den Themen Stadtplanung, Architektur, Medien, Wahrnehmung und Sound.

Together with Bruce Odland, he founded O+A in 1989. Their central theme is hearing perspective. They are known for their permanent sound installations in public space, which transform urban sound in real time, as in the works harmonic bridge MassMoca (US) since 1998 and Sonic Vista Frankfurt (D) since 2011. Sam Auinger has received numerous scholarships and prizes, including the Culture Prize of the City of Linz 2002 and the SKE Publicity Prize 2007. In 1997 he was a guest of the DAAD’s Berlin Artists-in-Residence Programme (berliner theorie) together with Rupert Huber. In 2008/2009 he was a scholarship holder at the Cité International des Arts in Paris and became the first city sound artist in Bonn in 2010. In 2011 he was featured artist at the Ars Electronica in Linz.

From 2008 to 2012, he was Professor at the UdK Berlin and Head of the Department of Experimental Sound Design in the Master’s Program in Sound Studies. From 2013 to 2015 he was an associate at the GSD in Harvard and in 2017 a guest lecturer in the Art Culture and Technology program at MIT.

In addition to his artistic work, he collaborates with urban planners and architects, gives lectures and conducts workshops, and frequently participates in international symposia on urban planning, architecture, media, perception and sound.
